The Bureau of Land Management has ended its moratorium on applications for solar power sites on public lands. In May, the BLM announced it would stop taking applications from developers while it develops new rules. But on Thursday, the agency reversed its decision after getting complaints from solar developers and officials in Western states, including Nevada. Governor Jim Gibbons had urged the BLM to lift the moratorium, as did Senator Harry Reid. Earlier this week, Reid predicted the BLM would lift the solar moratorium by the end of summer. In a statement, Reid hailed the decision, noting Nevada is, quote, "the Saudi Arabia of solar energy," posed to lead what he calls a "global clean energy revolution." Rhone Resch with the Solar Energy Industries Association also praised the BLM announcement, predicting dozens of solar power plants will be operating in the Southwest within the next ten years.
