Halverson Discipline Hearing Continues

Tuesday was day two of the disciplinary hearing for suspended Las Vegas District Judge Elizabeth Halverson. The Nevada state Judicial Discipline Commission is deciding on 14 counts of judicial misconduct against the 50-year-old Halverson. Following Monday's emotional testimony from Halverson's former bailiff Johnny Jordan, Chief District Judge Kathy Hardcastle was the next witness. Hardcastle testified that Halverson disrespected the court and was a constant distraction with her erratic behavior. Hardcastle added that some fellow judges even refused to attend meetings if they knew Halverson would be present. Halverson is facing allegations including falling asleep on the bench, having improper communication with jurors, and creating a hostile work environment for courthouse employees. She has been suspended with pay since the allegations first surfaced in the summer of 2007. The seven-member discipline commission will decide whether Halverson should be removed from the bench permanently. Halverson, who was first elected in 2006, is up for re-election this year.
