FBI: Violent Crime Up in Las Vegas

Violent crime rose by more than 30% in Las Vegas and unincorporated Clark County last year. That's according to the latest figures from the FBI, which show double digit increases in rape, robbery, and aggravated assault between 2005 and 2006. That offsets drops in property crimes, vehicle thefts and arson over the same period. Violent crime was also up in both Henderson and North Las Vegas, but murders in both those cities fell last year. Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie says that other large cities are also seeing increases and blames what he calls a "younger, more violent segment" of society for the uptick in crime. Gillespie adds that fighting robberies has become a particular priority for Metro Police. Nationally, the FBI says violent crimes increased nearly 2% while property crimes fell by the same amount.
