Former Nevada State Senator Ray Shaffer has died at the age of 76. Shaffer reportedly passed away over the weekend. A Democrat, he served his North Las Vegas district in the state Senate from 1985 to 2003, rising to Senate Majority Whip in 1991. Shaffer also ran unsuccessfully for state treasurer in 1990. He is survived by his wife Sharon and five children. In a statement, Senator Harry Reid said he was "saddened" to learn of Shaffer's passing. Reid continued, "Through the years Ray did an excellent job representing the people of North Las Vegas, and I know they will miss him...My thoughts go out to all of Ray's family and friends during this difficult time."
