New fire restrictions are now in effect for Southern Nevada, because of hot temperatures, low humidity, and dry vegetation. The Bureau of Land Management and National Park Service say those conditions mean a high threat of wildfires. The restrictions prohibit the following on all public lands: building an open fire, smoking, welding or use of any kind of torch, and use of any explosives or fireworks. Camp fires are allowed in designated recreation sites, such as a campground. Also, portable stove use is okay only if its gas or petroleum-based. Those found guilty of violating the fire restrictions can face up to a $10,000 fine and a year in jail.
