Nevada Senator Harry Reid is confident the Yucca Mountain project is doomed after a meeting today with President-elect Barack Obama. Reid, the Senate Majority Leader, met in his office with Obama and members of the President-Elect's team, including Vice President-elect Joseph Biden and incoming White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel. The main topic of the meeting was Obama's proposed economic stimulus package, but Senator Reid says he made sure they discussed Yucca Mountain, the proposed federal nuclear repository about 100 miles northwest of Las Vegas. Obama pledged to oppose the project during his campaign, and Reid said he got similar assurances from the President-elect during today's meeting. The Senator adds that he has "no doubt" that the Yucca Mountain funding will be cut "by a significant number" this year and that Obama's budget for next year "will have little if anything at all" for the project.
