Because Nevada's traffic fatality rate has dropped so dramatically, the state has been awarded five-point-five million dollars to continue tackling its traffic problems. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awarded the grant to the Department of Public Safety for its successful efforts over the past two years to make roadways safer. During that time, traffic fatalities decreased 14 percent in Nevada, mostly through the Joining Forces program that brings together law enforcement agencies across the state. Last year, 373 people lost their lives on Nevada highways and motor vehicle crashes were the leading cause of death for people between the ages of four and 34. OTS officials say the grant money will go toward more public education and enforcement programs aimed at changing driver behavior.
