After several hours of deliberation, the jury returned a verdict early Friday evening in the sentencing of convicted murderers Marc Colon and Gladys Perez. The 30-year-old Colon, who could have received the death penalty, was sentenced to life in prison without parole, while the 26-year-old Perez was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. Earlier this week, the couple was found guilty of first-degree murder and other charges for the death of Perez's daughter, Crystal Figueroa. The girl was found beaten to death in a dumpster behind a local apartment complex back in 2006. During the sentencing hearing, jurors heard emotional pleas from Colon's daughters to spare his life, while his attorneys argued that life in prison would be a harsher punishment than death because of the treatment he would get from fellow inmates.
