Residents Flock to Job Fairs

Job fairs are becoming the new place to see and be seen in Las Vegas. Before the economy started going south, the fairs attracted few people. Now thousand stand in line to press their resumes into hiring managers hands. The fairs have been happening more frequently in recent months. A fair held Thursday at Texas Station Casino and sponsored by the Las Vegas Review-Journal newspaper drew several thousand people who have been out of work in Las Vegas -- and even California. Employers say they are seeing people willing to change careers and be re-trained. Unemployment is seven-point-three-percent in the Las Vegas valley, about a point above the national average. An Economic Forum forecast recently revealed unemployment in Southern Nevada could reach eight-and-a-half percent by next summer.
