University Medical Center officials are looking at ways to reduce or cut a half-dozen hospital services to offset an $8 million shortfall. The county-run hospital recently cut its outpatient oncology service. Today, UMC administrators proposed several reductions before Clark County Commissioners. Those include cuts to the high-risk obstetrical unit, outpatient kidney dialysis service, outpatient mammography, and prenatal services at the Women's Center. Hospital officials say those moves will save millions of dollars, but at the expense of patient care. Earlier in the year, state health officials announced that Medicaid reimbursement for inpatient hospital services would be cut by 5%, which contributed to the state's own budget deficit.
