Friends, patients and family of Dr. Edna Almaden Makabenta are trying to come to grips with her murder at her West Charleston office on Monday. Makabenta was described as a kind woman devoted to her practice who had no enemies. Many patients wept as they were told what happened when they arrived for their appointments. Police say Makabenta was fatally shot in an examination room by one of her patients, 80-year-old Eliseo Santos. Santos then turned the gun on himself and later died at UMC. Police are investigating a motive for the shooting, but they say Santos filed a medical complaint against Dr. Makabenta and several other physicians 11 days ago.
