Convicted Killers Spared Death Penalty

Two men convicted for a double murder in Las Vegas have been spared the death penalty. A jury has sentenced John Chartier and David Wilcox to life in prison without parole for the killing of Chartier's ex-wife Rachel Bernat, and her father Carlos Aragon. The same jury recently convicted Chartier and Wilcox for the August 2004 murders. Police believe the killings stemmed from a bitter custody dispute between Chartier and Bernat. During penalty hearings this week, Chartier pleaded with jurors to spare his life. Chartier is a former treasurer for the Clark County Republican Party. Prosecutors say Wilcox carried out the murders for Chartier, but Wilcox's attorneys argued he had a history of post-traumatic stress disorder and severe depression.
