Las Vegas tourism continues a decline that's lasted for nearly two years. New figures from the Convention and Visitors Authority show nearly 3.1 million people visited Las Vegas in August, a 3.7% decrease and the 15th straight month of decline. The LVCVA says visitor numbers have decreased in 18 of the last 20 months. For the year-to-date, Las Vegas visitor volume is off by nearly 6% compared with the same period in 2008. However, the city continues to outpace other areas of the country, with this year's room occupancy rate of 82.7% far ahead of the national average of 56.6%. In addition to the slow economy's drag on consumer spending and leisure travel, poor convention business has also contributed to Las Vegas's decline. The LVCVA says convention attendance is off by more than 30% for the year-to-date.
