The rocky economic times have forced Bank of Nevada and an affiliated bank to lay off 28 employees. The largest locally-owned bank in the state is also shutting down three branch locations, which will leave it with a dozen offices. Reno affiliated First Independent Bank also handed out pink slips to workers. The banks are subsidiaries of Las Vegas-based Western Alliance Bancorporation. It reported a third-quarter loss of 23-point-nine-million dollars, but emphasizes it remains in strong financial shape.
