Metro Corrections Officer Killed in Car Crash

A Metro corrections officer died in a car crash on U.S. 95 near Searchlight early Saturday morning.  It happened around 5:45 a.m. on the 95 about a mile north of Searchlight and 50 miles south of Las Vegas.  Police say 49-year-old Daniel Leach was going southbound on his way to pick up prisoners for transport back to Las Vegas, when he clipped the back of a 10-wheel dump truck that was making a left turn.  Leach was the only occupant of his vehicle.  The two people in the dump truck were not injured.  Police have not released any other details about the crash, saying the investigation is in the early stages.

Born in Ohio and raised in Louisiana, Daniel Leach was a 25-year veteran of the Metro Police Department, as a corrections officer.  He was assigned to the Laughlin Tucker Holding Facility.  He is survived by a wife, son and daughter, his parents, brother and sister, plus extended family.
