Shoppers lined up for hours and crowded stores in the early hours of the morning for Black Friday. This year, retailers unveiled aggressive marketing campaigns and huge discounts, hoping to spur bigger spending than last year's lackluster holiday buying season. Long lines stretched outside many locations during the overnight hours, with some shoppers camping in tents. Some stores, such as Toys R Us and the Disney Store at Las Vegas Premium Outlets, opened at midnight Thursday night. Kohls, JC Penney, Target and Sears were open at 4 a.m., while Best Buy and the Galleria at Sunset Mall welcomed customers at 5. The Meadows and Boulevard Malls opened at 6 a.m.
Overall, the Retail Association of Nevada has estimated $1.2 billion will be spent statewide on gifts this holiday season, about the same as last year. Contrary to popular belief, Black Friday is actually not the busiest shopping day of the year. That distinction traditionally falls on the Saturday before Christmas.
